Do you think that medical research will ever find a cure for cataracts?
HI there, so I have a 20 year old appaloosa and he has a cataract in his right eye causing partial blindness. A few months ago the vet came to give him a physical and told us that we could take him to a science research center about 2 hours away to see if they could treat it. This would cost us 4000 dollars, and there would be no garantee if of his vision would come back in the eye. For the time being he is perfectly fine, but my dream is to get him to have full vision like he once had.
I am wondering, do you think they will ever find a special surgery or cure for a cataract?
I know they can do it with dogs and people, and some other animals, why not horses?
Have you heard about any horses regaining vision?
thank you everyone!
Also should i take my horse to the reseach center to do the surgery? do you think he can get his vision back?
the thing is, i dont want his other eye to get a catartact or his already blind eye to get worse, the vet said that he could become fully blind in his right eye and then it can move to the other eye.
My 5 yr old cat is losing his site to cataracts. I want to create a fund, “Eyes 4 Otis”. How do you do this?
We live in Brooklyn, NY. The veterinary hospital (Animal Medical Center) is in NYC. The cost of the surgery & one follow up visit is $4,700 to $4,900. I am currently on unemployment until Nov 8, 2009 & then that is it. Otis, my cat is also not currently employed. He is an amazingly social and sweet boy. He loves to sit in the hallway and wait to greet folks as they come out of the elevator. He loved to jump and catch toy mice in the air. His sight is not as good as it once was. He’s much more cautious walking around the apartment and carefully sniffs and reaches out his paw to make sure it is safe. I really want him to see again and be happy and healthy.
Otis has been diagnosed by Dr. Vanderwoort (the Ophthalmologist from the Animal Medical Center). I would love to help others in same situation as well being able to help Otis. I am looking for information on how to do this. Insurance will not cover any expense for a pre-existing condition.
How can I find people to help fund 10 year old Reagan’s medical care?
This child got a traumatic cataract following perfoating a corneoscleral injury.
We do not know the state of the retina but we want to give him a chance.
1. He will need cataract surgery with an intra ocular lens = 35,000 /=
2. If the retina is found detached , he will need to be referred to mengo for further retinal detachment surgery approximately 100,000/=
3. Post operatively , he will come for a review for a minimum of foru times but each visit , the medications do not exceed 10,000 /= U sh.
4 . When he has recovered , he will need spectacle correction for any refractive errors at a cost of about 100,000/=(bifocal) .
These are the expected hospital costs.
If they opt to sleep in a private room , this at rate of 10,000/= per night.
At each surgery, they may stay for 4 days.
Other costs I am not sure of are transport costs and personal maintainnce for the child and attendant while in hospital.
Best regards,
Dr . Tindyebwa. L.K
